Paithani sarees : So regal and so real!

Known as one of the most elegant weaves for sarees, originally from Maharashtra, Paithani sarees are a popular regional attire worn by the women of India. The signature motifs such as variations of the peacock on the pallu and oblique squares on the border are the identifying features typical to Paithani. These sarees tend to incorporate a kaleidoscope of colors that makes them strikingly visually attractive. A Paithani Saree is considered as one of the most unique drapes because of the way it is worn throughout the country.

Choice of the rich and the famous

Generally, yarns of a single color are used in the warp across the length of the saree, and different colors are used in the weft i.e. along the width to form intricate motifs giving the composition a kaleidoscope effect. Yet another specialty of the saree is that it is made of authentic silk mixed with traces of gold zari. The richness of the material and the intricacy of designs take hours of arduous labor and skills making Paithani one of the costlier choices. As a result, Paithani has grown to become a symbol of wealth.

Because this form of saree originated in close proximity to the famous Ajanta caves of India, one can easily spot Buddhist influence on the craft. Variations of motifs such as Buddha sitting on a lotus is used extensively in this particular craft. Each piece is designed with impressive attention to the details, which can be easily spotted in as much as one glance of the Saree. Everything from the body to the blouse is a piece of art.

Paithani has a regal air to it and only gets better with time. It’s an heirloom piece handed from one generation to the next. There are three distinct types of Paithani sarees classified on the basis of their color. The Kali Chandrakala is completely black and has a red border to it. Raghu, perhaps the most popular of the Paithani has parrot green as the hero color. Shirodak is a pure white Paithani. There are several other classifications according to the motifs and weaves.
